Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro Steam & Water Analysis System

Boiler Steam & Water Analysis Systems for the monitoring of pH, Specific Conductivity, CATION Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen and Sodium Ion content of high-purity water in a 450 MW oil-fired steam generating plant at Holyrood, Newfoundland. Three identical systems were produced and involved sample conditioning from 750 degrees F and 2500 psi. System components were made entirely of type 316 stainless steel including instrument tubing, fittings, valves and flow-through analytical cells.

Hibernia Ballast Control System

Avalon Controls Ltd. was contracted for the manufacture, assembly and shop testing of the Hibernia Ballast Control System. The system consisted of an instrumentation panel c/w digital displays and mimic board installed at the bottom of the Gravity Base Structure (GBS) and topside-mounted consoles which interfaced with field mounted level detection sensors and underkeel clearance monitor. The system monitored and controlled behaviour of the one-million tonne GBS during the construction, topsides mating and tow out phases of the massive Offshore Oil Production Platform.

Standby Power System, CCG Loran "C" Station, Comfort Cove

Avalon Controls Limited supplied the standby
power system for the Canadian Coast Guard's
Loran "C" navigational aids station at Comfort
Cove, Newfoundland. The system consists of
two 100 KW diesel generators configured for
automatic startup on loss of utility power
connected through a paralleling switchboard manufactured by Avalon
Controls. The system has provision for manual permissive paralleling between the
two generators as well as between either generator and the utility for no-break load
transfer. This is the first such system manufactured for the Coast Guard in
Newfoundland. Previously,  these systems have been imported from Ontario.

Refurbishing of Electrical Systems, Bow Drill III Semisubmersible

Avalon Controls Ltd. provided technical assistance and support to Marystown

Shipyard Limited on refurbishing of the electrical systems on the

semisubmersible drilling rig Bow Drill III following an on-board fire in 1987.

Working under sub-contract from Marystown Shipyard, we were responsible

for identifying all power, control and instrumentation cabling on board the rig,

as well as cataloguing source and destination of each conductor, condition,

function and verification of operation of existing and replacement wiring.

Heat Trace System Replacement, Bow Drill III

We conducted a complete heat tracing system survey aboard the Bow Drill III,

as well as the selection and installation of replacement ground fault detection

system. The system which was replaced was found to be erratic in operation

and was replaced using Siemens ground fault circuit breakers which provided

very consistent and reliable operation.

CSI Certification of Equipment, Maersk Vinlander Semisubmersible

Avalon Controls Ltd. conducted megger testing of all equipment onboard the

Maersk Vinlander for Canada Steamships Inspectorate (CSI) requirements.

We also assisted in coordinating temporary installation of emergency power

systems during the repair of a major failure of the rig's main electrical power

system. Commissioning of the repaired main generator system involved

extensive testing of heavy loads such as the rotary table, drawworks and mud

pumping systems.

Newfoundland Hydro Wastewater Treatment Plant, Holyrood, Newfoundland

Avalon Controls Ltd. provided complete instrumentation startup and calibration

services of process monitoring and control equipment including pH, turbidity,

flow, level and pressure measurements in a boiler acid wash neutralization

and conditioning plant.

Distributed Control Systems

Avalon Controls Ltd. supplied a complete Distributed Control System for the
City of Corner Brook water system. The system consists of
seven remote pumping sites and a central control and monitoring station

utilizing Allen-Bradley PLC-2 series processor interfacing with an IBM industrial

PC running PCIM software.

Avalon Controls Ltd. personnel have had direct experience with other Distributed

Control Systems. Vice-President Ken Power assisted in installation, commissioning,

configuration, calibration and maintenance of a complete Leeds and Northrup MAX1 DCS

at Mount Pleasant Tungsten Mine at St. George, N.B. The system contained several

thousand I/O points, a fiber-optic data highway and interfaced with a Modicon 584L PLC

system. Since establishing Avalon Controls Ltd., both Ken Power and Gerald Guy, as

well as several of our field service personnel have had hands-on experience with a

Foxboro SPEC 2000 distributed control system at North Star Cement Ltd. The system

has approximately 1000 I/O and interfaces with an Allen-Bradley PLC-2 family controller.

We have also worked on an IBM PC-based DCS at Baie Verte Mines Ltd. Wet

Processing Facility, Baie Verte, Newfoundland.

Protection and Control Panels, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro

Avalon Controls Ltd. has manufactured twelve Protection and Control Panels

for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro's electrical distribution grid throughout

Newfoundland. The panels are installed in main terminal stations at Bay D'Espoir,

Berry Hill and Salt Pond, Newfoundland and control field installations of transmission

line disconnect devices, circuit breakers and reclosers. Incorporated in our panels

were ASEA Brown Boveri Combiflex utility protection relay systems as well as

products manufactured by Westinghouse, General Electric, GEC, Schweitzer

Engineering Laboratories and a host of other manufacturers.

Data Acquisition System, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
Avalon Controls Ltd., selected and supplied a Leeds and Northrup Micromax II

Data Acquisition System (DAS) for monitoring of four Hydroelectric Turbines at

the Bay D'Espoir Generating Station. The project involved the supply, installation

assistance, and training of system operators. The Micromax system is installed
in the main plant control room and monitors the
condition of turbine generator
cooling air flows, bearing temperatures, vibration
levels, differential pressures, etc.

Gottwald Cranes, St. John's Waterfront

Avalon Controls has provided warranty repair services on two electrically controlled
mobile harbour cranes for Gottwald GMBH, subsidiary of Mannesmann DEMAG of

Germany. This contract has involved extensive troubleshooting, diagnostic testing
and repair of Siemens PLC controls, interlocking devices, variable frequency drives,
SCR controlled hoist and travel motors and peripheral control components. Emergency
call out services are available and have been provided on a 24-hours basis.

Fish Protein Hydrolysate Plant, Marystown, Newfoundland

Avalon Controls supplied operator interface consoles, PLC enclosures and junction
boxes for all field wiring for International Fish Protein's Hydrolysate Plant
at Marystown,
Newfoundland. This involved procurement,
assembly, testing, CSA Certification and field commissioning of an Allen-Bradley PLC-5 series control system.

Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Ltd. - #7 Paper Machine & Winder
